    Description
General H.H.“Hap” Arnold. Third Report of the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Air Forces to the Secretary of War
, 12 November 1945 (London, His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1946). Probable first British Edition. Original printed wrappers.72 pp. Illustrated with photographs and drawings.
“…space ships, capable of operating outside the earth’s atmosphere.  The design of such a ship is all but practicable today; research will unquestionably bring it into being within the foreseeable future…”
This remark, buried in a government document that focuses on the end of the Air War in Europe and the Pacific – but also speculates about future atomic warfare - might be easily overlooked were it not for the famous Science Fiction writer Arthur Clarke, who makes prominent note of it in his classic 1946 speech to the British Interplanetary Society on the “Challenge of the Spaceship”.  Arnold shows photographs of innovative German rockets and predicts the future of warfare would be dominated by guided missiles carrying atomic weapons.
