    Description
?Operation ICEBERG, the Okinawa Campaign, was the final and bloodiest battle of the Pacific War (April 1-June 22, 1945) with 160,000 combined casualties and another 150,000 Okinawan civilian deaths. The sheer bloodshed of the campaign led the Joint Chiefs of Staff and President Truman to the decision to drop the atomic bombs in the hope that the invasion of the Japanese home islands could be averted and with it the estimated 1 million casualties of Operation DOWNFALL. In preparation for Operation DOWNFALL, the 10th Army's G-2 (Intelligence) Section prepared an "Intelligence Monograph" or "after action report" in five parts, which is the subject of this listing.  I purchased the monographs in one lot from the late, great Manion's International Auction on September 2, 2000.
Ironically, the purchase date was the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Instrument of Surrender of the Japanese Empire aboard the
    USS Missouri
    on September 2, 1945!
The monograph was printed on oversized 19-3/8" x 15-7/8" paper sheets with colored covers, reproduced from mimeographs under the supervision of "T/SGT Norris" of the 3020th Engineer Topographical Company and is dated August 1945 (see close-up image above). The monograph is composed of five parts, four of which are present in this grouping, as follows: (1) Part I entitled "Japanese Tactics & Technique", composed of two sections (Section A General Tactical Essay, 19 pages and Section B Japanese Order of Battle, 24 pages); (2) Part II, entitled "Fortifications & Service Installations", 12 pages; (3) Part IV entitled "Psychological Warfare & Morale", 4 pages; and (4) Part V entitled "Special Prisoner of War Interrogation", 13 pages. Parts IV and V are stapled together.
Part III, entitled "Photo Intelligence Lessons of the Ryukyus Campaign" is not present and it also appears that several sections of Part II may also missing.
Due to the large size of the monographs, I have only photographed the covers of Parts I, II, IV and V and first page of Part I Section B (order of battle).
However, if the prospective buyer would like to see a limited number of the interior pages of each of the Parts, I will, within reason, be happy to provide additional images. However, please bear in mind that the buyer will have my inspection period as noted below, which is far superior to any images I could provide.
Here's an opportunity for the advanced collector of paper ephemera to obtain an "after action report" for this pivotal campaign of which there are very few sets outside of official Army libraries, such as Carlisle Barracks, PA.  The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day (
not the 14-days that they insert in my listings without my consent
) right of inspection and return/refund privilege, excluding postage.
    PLEASE NOTE
: Due to the oversized packaging to mail this monograph, the postage given in the listing is only an estimate and may be higher.  The buyer will be advised whether any additional postage is required to be paid.
