    Description

Original WWII US Navy Map Of Japanese Taiwan USS WASP Target Area 8" x 16".
This is an original World War II era map of USS WASP Targets in Taiwan (under Japanese rule with Japanese place names).  The map is 8" x 16" and folded in the middle. The date and source of publication is not clearly marked on the map - there is a mark of "1944" (see middle photo #6) - but we are uncertain that this is the actual date of the map since The USS Wasp was lost in action on 15 September 1942, after being hit by 3 torpedoes from a Japanese submarine.
The map is printed with the words "YORKTOWN AREA" and "WASP AREA" which appear to have been hand-written on the master copy of the map from which this original map was then produced.
This map belonged to US Navy Flying Officer, Lieutenant John Albert McBrayer of Lattimore, NC. Lieutenant McBrayer survived the sinking of the Aircraft Carrier USS Wasp in 1942 and later served on the USS Yorktown. A photocopy of a newspaper article from The Charlotte News (dated 10/31/42) will be included with this lot.
This is a very rare original World War II era map belonging to a true hero.
