Description
This artifact is a rare and pristine example of an Escape and Evasion map used by the Flying Tigers in the CBI Theater in World War 2.The map is two sided with both sides of the Indochinese peninsula. One of the then Yunnan clique and French Indochina (modern day China and Vietnam). The other side shows upper Burma (modern day Myanmar).
With an early date of 1942, it correctly lacks color and is a rare example of an early war silk escape map.
In terms of condition this item barely shows its age. The silk is in fine condition with minimal fraying on the edges with no damage to the actual inner area of the cloth map. There is slight staining to the map with the largest spot in the mid left/right depending on orientation yet does not impede legibility. In fact all ink is clear and legible and there is no bleeding from water damage or storage issues.
The particular example on sale is verified as owned by Major General (then Colonel) John K. Hester, both a Flying Tiger and accomplished officer and pilot who met a tragic end in the 60's. This piece is being sold on behalf of the family.
This map with its rare early war origin and certified use by an Army Air Corp Officer with flight logs to prove 50 combat missions within the CBI theater of operations. Add to that the immaculate condition of a silk map from 1942 and any Flying Tiger enthusiast and/or collector would be intrigued by this fantastic artifact.
