Description
This is a neat and unique grouping identified to a WWII aviation radioman who served with Torpedo Squadron THREE (VT-3) aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-3).The grouping consists of:
- 2 original paintings
- medals, including his named Good Conduct Medal, and ribbon bars
- U.S. Navy combat aircrew wings with 3 stars; marked sterling and Amico
- U.S. Navy aviation rating patch
- framed copy of a picture of the destroyer USS Dunlap (which rescued this aviator when his plane crashed on takeoff in 1943)
- copies of over 30 pages from his U.S. Navy service record and a copy of a picture of him from the National Archives
The 2 paintings were done on canvas after the war and are framed with no glass. One depicts the USS Saratoga and measures 16” by 20”. The other depicts an Avenger torpedo bomber attacking a Japanese aircraft carrier and measures 12” by 16”. Both are nicely done.
The veteran served with Torpedo Squadron TEN (VT-10) from January 1942 to September 1942. He was then transferred to Torpedo Squadron THREE (VT-3). While with VT-3, he flew off of the USS Saratoga and was also based at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal when the squadron was transferred there.
